There are plenty of large, colorful, attractive parrots. Many of them talk. In fact, some have an amazing vocabulary. So why do people love the Gouldian finch? The answer is simple. These creatures make such great pets, and for a variety of reasons, including:
Many domesticated birds love humans. They run to them and they enjoy their company. The finch is the exact opposite. It fears humans and it typically avoids them. That probably sounds like a bad thing but it actually works in your favor because the birds do not require as much attention as other pets.
You shouldn’t neglect them. However, they do not expect you to touch, poke, and prod them, and neither are they interested in cuddling with you. If you have a busy schedule and you don’t have the time to give your finch the loving attention and care you think it deserves, the bird will survive and thrive all the same.
They want to sing, eat, drink, and play without the interruption of humans. If all you want is a pet that won’t consume so much of your time, there is no better option than the finch.
The finch is a relatively loud creature that is capable of producing a wide range of sounds. If you enjoy bird song, the finch will keep you occupied with its variety of songs. Yes, the bird doesn’t want human contact. But that shouldn’t stop you from listening to its cries from a distance.
The finch is a beautiful bird. Because they come from all corners of the globe, you can find them in a bevy of rich and vibrant colors. You cannot fail to find a finch whose colors and patterns match the appearance of your home.
If you like the idea of raising cute finch babies, the fact that this bird breeds so easily will appeal to you. Finches have no problem breeding in captivity. They will give you as many feathery babies as you could possibly desire.
The Gouldian finch isn’t a fussy bird. It is quite easy to care for. All it wants is a clean cage with freshwater and enough seeds to satisfy its hunger. You have to position the cage in a location that gives the finch access to ample sunlight.
It needs room to jump and fly. However, it doesn’t have any special dietary requirements, not unless you have chosen to purchase one of the more exotic species. For the most part, you don’t have to do much to keep the finch alive and healthy. This makes the bird attractive to people that are too busy to keep a close eye on their pets. Again, you cannot neglect the bird. But it won’t consume so much of your attention.
Finches won’t be with you for the rest of your life. They are perfect for people that want a pet they can look after in the short term. Finches live anywhere between four and eight years. You don’t have to worry about looking after them a decade or two later when you can no longer afford to keep them.
